Cards pick up three wins in fall finale
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team wrapped up the fall season with three wins on the final day of the Louisville Tennis Classic Sunday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Â
"We had a very good tournament this weekend. Today was good because this is as close to a dual match feel as you can get in the fall," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "It was great to see Mariana win being the last match on. It was fun to see her execute the correct plays at the right time to get the win.
Â
The Cardinals split six singles matches against Miami (Ohio) on the final day of the tournament. Junior Mariana Humberg outlasted Hannah Shteyn 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 1. Junior Ariana Rodriguez picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Emily Struble at the five-spot and sophomore Aleksandra Mally defeated Erin Rodriguez 6-1, 6-0 on court six.
Â
At the No. 2 spot, sophomore Tiffany Huber fell 6-0, 6-4 to Anzhelika Shapovalova . Sophomore Sena Suswam lost 6-4, 6-4 to Nelli Ponomareve at No. 3. Senior Olivia Boesing won her first set againsy Andreea Baditeanu, but fell 6-4, 6-2 in the next two sets.
Â
"Overall we had a very good fall," said Beckham. "We improved a lot in doubles which has been a major problem for us the past couple of seasons. Being able to win some doubles points will help us win more overall team matches in the spring. We still have more improvement to make, but we are definitely moving in the right direction heading into spring season."
