Tess Clark has 11 kills for Louisville
Tess Clark had 11 kills, two aces and two blocks but the University of Louisville volleyball team fell 25-22, 26-24, 25-15 to Duke Friday afternoon in ACC volleyball action in Durham, N.C.
Â
The Cardinals (7-16, 2-11 in the ACC) had 56 digs, led by Molly Sauer's 20 and three blocks led by Janelle Jenkins' two. Kali Eaken had 31 assists. Duke moves to 17-6 and 11-2 in the ACC. The Blue Devils were led by Leah Meyer's 13 kills and six blocks. DU hit .304 and had 66 digs, four aces and nine blocks.
"We were led again by Tess Clark," said Anne Kordes, UofL head coach. "Give Duke credit, they had a game plan that is driven by their middles that depends on a strong serve and serve-receive. They did a phenomenal job on serve receive and that allowed their middles to go off on us. We lack composure during long rallies and we need to get into the mindset to stay strong and relaxed. We have all the athleticism, passion and hard-work we just need to stay composed."Â
Â
In the first set, both teams hit .278 and had a block a piece. Duke used a 5-0 run early to go up 8-3 and then held the Cards at arms length although Louisville tied three times and cut the lead to two at 15-13, 18-16 and 22-24 but fell 25-22 on a kill by Samantha Amos. The Cards we lead by Tess Clark and Morgan Miller who each had four kills.
Â
In the second set, UofL's hitting chilled to .122 and the Cardinals were blocked five times. The Car and ds took the lead on a 5-0 run to go up 15-14.  After trading points, Duke answered with a 7-2 run to go up 21-18. The Cards tied at 23 and 24 both times on kills by Tess Clark. Duke scored on a kill by Leah Meyer and then blocked Morgan Miller for set point, winning 26-24 to take a 2-0 set lead into the break.
Â
The Cards were out-hit .378 to .094 in the third set and were blocked three times.  Duke blew out to a 12-5 lead early and the Cardinals were unable to string together a run before falling 25-15.
