Women's Tennis Starts Strong at Louisville Tennis Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team opened the Louisville Tennis Classic with nine wins on Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

The Cardinals went undefeated in doubles, posting six wins to start the day. Playing at No. 1 spot, juniors Abbie Pahz and Mariana Humberg teamed to beat Virginia Tech's Katherine Butler and McKenzie Collins 6-3 in their opening match. The duo went on to register a 6-3 win over Memphis' Anki Wind and Hanna Sohn.

Senior Elle Stokes and sophomore Sena Suswam cruised to a 6-1 win over Virginia Tech's Sarah Baron and Luisa Uscocivich at the No. 2 position to start their day and followed with a 6-2 victory over Marta Mora and Katherine Cao of Memphis at the No. 3 spot.

Playing at No. 3 doubles, Ariana Rodriguez and Jessie Paul defeated Virginia Tech's Emily Pence and Sansitha Nandakumar 6-4. The juniors rounded out the Cards' doubles wins with a 6-3 decision against Memphis' Gabrielle Paul and Josephine Cao at No. 2.

Louisville went on to pick up three singles wins out of six matches against Memphis. Suswam stayed perfect on the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3. Sophomore Tiffany Huber posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Gabrielle Paul at the four-spot. Senior Olivia Boesing rebounded from a 6-4 first set loss to beat Josephine Cao 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.

"I thought we had a very good day," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "I thought we played some of the best doubles we've played in years. We're showing progress, which is always important. Singles was good as well. This was (Aleksandra) Mally's first match back after sitting out the entire fall because of injury. She played pretty well, and it's just a matter of getting match reps in. Overall, I felt like we played pretty good tennis and it was a great way to start off the tournament."
