Cardinals play the Wolfpack to a 1-1 tie on Thursday night in a Top 25 Showdown
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 21 University of Louisville women's soccer team battled No. 24 NC State to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night at Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals improved to 7-3-3 on the year and 2-1-2 in ACC play while the Wolfpack improved to 9-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play.
Both teams started the game going back and forth trying to gain possession. In the second minute of action Taylor Bucklin was tested early and had back-to-back saves to keep the Wolfpack off the board.
The Cardinals had their first opportunity of the match in the 13th minute. Brooklynn Rivers received the ball and made a nice turn though two defenders and dribbled to the top of the box. Rivers put a shot on goal but it was saved.
Louisville would get another chance in the 25th minute when NC State's Tziarra King tackled Alison Price and was issued a yellow card just across midfield. Sarah Feola stepped up to take the free kick and launched it in the goal mouth but it was saved.
In the waning minutes of the first half, NC State would get one last chance before the intermission. The Wolfpack's shot hit the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play and headed out by the Cardinal defense.
NC State struck first in the 51st minute off a throw in. The ball was passed right to the feet of Kristina Schuster, who placed a ball right past Bucklin to put the Wolfpack up 1-0.
A minute later the Cardinals responded, scoring off a set piece. Freshman Brooklynn Rivers placed a corner kick perfectly on the head on Inger Katrine Bjerke, who placed it into the back of the net for the equalizer, tying the game at 1-1.
The Cardinals had two chances in the final 10 minutes of the second half to put them on top. Louisville was awarded a corner in the 82nd minute. Rivers would put a shot in the box that found the head of Niamh Nelson and bounced off the crossbar back into the field of play and headed out by a Wolfpack defender.
In the 87th minute, the Wolfpack would be awarded a free kick just outside the box on the left side. A shot on goal would be punched out by Bucklin, and the score would remain tied going at the end of regulation.
NC State got the best chance of the overtime in the 100th minute when the Wolfpack dribbled into the box and a clearance attempt found a Wolfpack foot and a point blank shot was saved and gobbled up by Bucklin.
In the second overtime, Louisville would be awarded back-to-back corners, but were unable to find the back of the net, ending in a tie.
Louisville finished the match with a 21-17 shot advantage and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Bucklin tied her season-high in saves with nine, while Wootten finished with eight.
The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, Oct. 9 when they host No. 15 Clemson in Lynn Stadium at 1:00 p.m. The game is Senior Day and a pregame ceremony will take place for the Cardinals' five seniors.
