Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 15 Clemson 1-0

Cardinals second half effort was not enough to overcome Clemson’s early goal
LOUISVILLE, Ky. –The University of Louisville women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Clemson Sunday afternoon at Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals fall to 7-4-3 on the year and 2-2-2 in ACC play, while the Tigers improve to 9-3-2 overall and 3-1-2 in ACC play.
"The second half I think we just pressed them a little bit higher on the field," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "It wasn't so much defending as it was attacking, I think we kept the ball better. We had a great chance in the first half when Ari (Arianna Ferraro) hit the cross bar and a cross to Sarah Feola from Kaela Dickerman. Then in the second half when Callie McKinney had a clear look on a corner and the keeper made a big time save. In games like this, those are three really good chances that we create despite not having the ball for 45 minutes in the first half. I thought we did better with the ball in the second half."
Clemson's Jenna Weston scored the only goal of the game for either side at the 34:45 mark after a long assist from the Tiger's goalkeeper, Kailen Sheridan.
Taylor Bucklin was able to make eight saves on the day with the first coming in the sixth minute. Weston headed a shot at the goal, but a diving Bucklin kept it out of the net.
Bucklin was forced to make a save on a shot from just behind midfield from Sheridan at the 23rd minute.
The Cardinals had multiple chances on the day, but were not able to put one in the net. Alison Price put the first shot on goal for Cardinals in the 30th minute on a header off a free kick from Inger Katrine Bjerke, but Sheridan was there to make the diving save.
Arianna Ferraro knocked a shot off the crossbar and back into the field of play on the Cardinals second shot of the game in the 43rd minute.
The Cardinals pushed up on offense in the second half and outshot the Tigers 8-3. Their best chance came off a corner in the 59th minute with a shot by Inger Katrine Bjerke that was blocked by a Clemson defender, Callie McKinney then collected the rebound and fired a hard shot, but the Tiger's goalkeeper was able to make the save.
Niamh Nelson was able to get free for the Cardinals and fire a shot just wide of the goal in the 73rd minute in a late attempt to tie the game.
Clemson finished the match with a 13-10 shot advantage and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. While the Cardinals outshot the Tigers 8-3 in the second half. Bucklin finished the game eight saves, one behind her career high, while Sheridan finished with four.
The Cardinals return to action on next Sunday, October 16th at 1:00 pm as the visit Blacksburg, Virginia to take on Virginia Tech.
