Louisville women finish fourth while Edwin Kibichiy sets a new school record to lead the men to a seventh place
Cary, N.C. – The University of Louisville women's (49-39; 13-5) cross country team finished fourth at the ACC Championships for their best finish since joining the ACC. Senior Edwin Kibichiy set a new school record to finish second, leading the Louisville men's (50-30; 9-3) team to a seventh place finish. The Syracuse men and NC State women claimed 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Cross Country Championship titles on Friday at WakeMed Soccer Park.
"Our women's team took a big step forward today," said head coach Dale Cowper. "I can't say enough about how our student-athletes have responded throughout the year. Joe Walker and Jenna Wrieden have done a tremendous job putting the season plan together and the students have executed it at the highest level. This was a true team effort and we'll celebrate the result before getting back to work, training for the regional championships in the middle of November."
Freshman Dorcas Wasike led the women with an eighth place finish. Wasike clocked a personal best time of 20:14.7 to earn first team All-ACC honors. Junior Bailey Davis also finished with a personal best time of 20:43.4 to finish 22nd. Davis knocked almost two minutes off her previous personal best time.
Caroline Gosser finished 34th for the Cardinals with a time of 21:02.8. It was also a personal best for Gosser since joining the Cardinals this season. Junior Mia Ross finished 50th with a personal best time of 21:25.8. Freshman Bailey Beery ran a personal best time of 21:26.7 to finish 51st. "The men performed right where we anticipated," said Cowper. "Edwin and Calvin worked together to earn All-ACC first team honors. This was a challenging course and Edwin narrowly missed the individual title to a tremendous runner from Syracuse."
Kibichiy ran a tightly contested race, finishing second with a personal best and a school record time of 22:52.2. Kibichiy was less than two tenths of a second behind Syracuse's Justyn Knight.
