Louisville will scrimmage at 3 p.m., on Friday, 10 a.m., on Saturday at Patterson Stadium
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville baseball team officially kicked off fall workouts with an afternoon practice session on Tuesday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Tuesday's session marked the opening day of the Cardinals' six weeks of full-squad practices in preparation of the 2016 season. Louisville will conclude the first week of work with a pair of open, intra-squad scrimmages at Patterson Stadium on Friday at 3 p.m., ET and Saturday at 10 a.m.
"It's always fun to get back on the field and teach our system. It's a big step in combining the returners with the new guys," said Louisville head coach Dan McDonnell. "This will be a very competitive and exciting fall."
The Cardinals are tentatively scheduled to host weekend scrimmages nearly every week until the conclusion of fall workouts in mid-October. Dates and times for future scrimmages as well as the annual Pizza Bowl series will be announced throughout the fall.
One big change in Louisville's fall schedule this year is the addition of the team's five-day trip to the Dominican Republic on Oct. 2-6. The trip, which will coincide with the university's mid-term break, will likely include multiple games against local winter league teams while also offering community service opportunities for the players and coaches. The complete schedule of activities for the trip will be announced soon.
Louisville returns 21 letterwinners from its 2015 squad, which set an ACC record for conference wins in a season finishing 25-5 overall to win the Atlantic Division crown. Chosen as a national seed for the second time in school history, the Cardinals were 47-18 overall and ranked as highly as No. 8 following the season after advancing to their third straight NCAA Super Regional.
Leading the list of talented and experienced returnees for the Cardinals for 2016 is a quartet of players who earned All-America honors last season – senior pitcher Kyle Funkhouser, junior outfielder Corey Ray, junior pitcher Zack Burdi and sophomore pitcher/first basemen Brendan McKay. Louisville also features a trio of 2015 Cape Cod League All-Stars in junior outfielder Colin Lyman, junior infielder Nick Solak and sophomore infielder Blake Tiberi.
In his nine seasons guiding the Cardinals baseball program, McDonnell has positioned Louisville among the nation's elite programs with the three College World Series berths, five NCAA Super Regional appearances, eight NCAA Regional bids, six regular season conference championships, 22 All-Americans and 406 wins overall (sixth best nationally during that nine-year span).
