Cardinals fall to the Panthers in ACC action
LOUISVILLE, KY. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon in Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
"Congratulations to Pitt, they broke us down on the goal that they scored," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "It was a typical Sunday game, two very tired teams, they just did a better job of keeping possession and they capitalized off of it. We didn't keep enough possession when we did have it. We created some chances just weren't able to capitalize on those chances."
Pittsburgh took control of the game early, keeping the majority of possession for the first 20 minutes. The Panthers had their best shot of the half in the 11th minute when Taylor Pryce's shot rolled across the goal line and out.
Isabella Habuda took the first shot for the Cardinals off a corner kick in the 19th minute and Pittsburgh keeper Taylor Francis made the save. Louisville had a series of shots in the next three minutes but Francis made another save regain possession for the Panthers.
Pittsburgh enjoyed its share of scoring chances in the first half, finishing the first half with four of their eight shots on goal, while Louisville's Taylor Bucklin to make several outstanding saves to keep the contest scoreless at the break.
Pittsburgh had an 8-5 shot advantage in the first half and a 3-2 corner kick advantage in the half.
The Cardinals took possession to start the second half but the Panthers were productive with the possession they had in the second half which paid off in the 70th minute. Pryce was streaking up field and Emily Pietrangelo found her for the goal and a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals pressed late in the half, looking for the equalizer. The Cards had three consecutive shots in the finals two minutes but could not connect.
Both teams finished with 12 shots and four corner kicks. Bucklin finished with six saves for the Cardinals while Francis finished with four saves for the Panthers.
The Cardinals (4-5-1, 1-2-0 ACC) will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 1 as they take a break from ACC action and host Morehead State in Lynn Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
