Schmitt Scores Sixth Goal as Louisville Draws with NC State

Freshman has three goals this week and six total in nine matches overall; Kubel adds third assist in as many games
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Tate Schmitt scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season as the 24th-ranked Louisville men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with No. 22 NC State on a rainy Friday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The result continued a recent trend for the Cardinals (4-2-3, 0-0-3 ACC), who have finished with three draws (all ACC matches)Â in their last five outings while adding a fourth overtime loss during that stretch. With rain falling throughout the evening on Friday, the teams connected for both goals during a span of 1 minute, 14 seconds late in the first half. It was the first time in five matches this season Louisville has scored first and did not earn a victory.
"Tate continues to score some big goals for us, but I was disappointed in how we responded (after the goal). We dropped off too much and gave them too much space," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "I told them after the game that there is a very fine line between winning and not. It's that way in the ACC because they're all very good teams."
The scoring started in the 43rd minute when Schmitt delivered a header inside the far right post following a beautifully placed corner kick from sophomore Tim Kubel. The goal was the third of the week for Schmitt, who scored twice in Tuesday's win over Memphis. It was the third straight match with an assist and the eighth career assist for Kubel.
The advantage was short-lived for the Cardinals as the visiting Wolfpack (6-2-1, 1-1-1 ACC) connected for the equalizer moments later in the 44th minute after Philip Carmon was on the receiving end of a cross from Simon Blotko and scored with a header inside the left post. It was the first goal of the season for Carmon, while the assist was the third of the year for Blotko.
From that point, neither side could find the decisive goal as Louisville finished with a narrow 9-8 edge in shots, including a 4-3 margin in shots on goal. The Cardinals doubled the corner kick chances of the Wolfpack finishing with an 8-4 advantage.
Up next, Louisville visits Ohio State for a non-conference match on Tuesday at 7 p.m., ET.
