Visiting Cardinal gain command in 81st minute behind goal from Jordan Morris
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Stanford's Jordan Morris delivered the only goal of the night in the 81st minute to lift the eighth-ranked Cardinal to a 1-0 win over No. 18 Louisville on Monday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
On a night when chances were limited for each side, visiting Stanford gained control of the scoreboard when Morris, while making a run down the center of the field, received a ball from Ty Thompson and scored inside the right post. It was the first goal of the season for Morris and the Cardinal (1-1), who played its second straight road match against a top 20 foe after falling last week at No. 17 UC Santa Barbara.
Suffering its first loss of 2015 in the first ever matchup between the two schools, Louisville moved to 1-1 overall on the season. The Cardinals lost despite holding an 8-5 advantage in shots, while Stanford finished with a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.
Louisville narrowly missed on multiple chances to be the first to break through in the second half, starting in the 71st minute when Stanford goalkeeper made the stop on a looping header by sophomore Sawyer Edwards (Parker, Colo.). Less than a minute later, freshman Johnathon Wright (Fishers, Ind.) followed a corner kick with a header off the crossbar. In the 80th minute, Wright followed another corner kick with a strong header which narrowly sailed over the crossbar.
In goal, sophomore Nick Jeffs (Ottawa, Canada) had two saves for the Cardinals, while Andrew Epstein had a pair of stops for Stanford. Overall, the two teams finished with four corner kick chances each. The 13 total shots were the fewest combined by two teams in the 15 matches contested at Lynn Stadium since its opening last August.
Up next, No. 18 Louisville will continue its season-opening four-match homestand at Lynn Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m., against Stony Brook.
