Schmitt, Reynolds finish with one goal, one assist each; Tuesday’s Battle of the Bluegrass up next
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Led by freshmen Tate Schmitt and Danny Reynolds, the 15th-ranked Louisville men's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over Stony Brook on Friday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Schmitt scored his team-leading second goal of the season and added his first career assist, while Reynolds connected for his first collegiate goal and first assist for the Cardinals (2-1), who had their highest scoring outing since a 3-0 win over Evansville on Oct. 21, 2014. Senior Ben Strong chipped in with his first goal of the night and the sixth in two seasons in Louisville.
The Cardinals opened the scoring early on Friday when Schmitt fired a shot with his left foot inside the right post from just outside the center of the 18-yard box for the 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of action. Junior Romilio Hernandez and sophomore Jack Gayton were credited with assists, the first of the season for both players.
A little more than five minutes later, Louisville pushed its lead to 2-0 when Strong connected on a header from the six-yard box scoring inside the left post in the 12th minute. Reynolds helped create the chance with a beautifully placed cross from the left side of the field allowing Strong to drive it past Seawolves (1-1-1) goalkeeper Jason Orban.
Stony Brook cut the Louisville advantage in half in the 21st minute after Martin Giordano used his right foot to fire a shot inside the right post following a cross from Alejandro Fritz. It was the first goal of the season for Giordano.
After maintaining the one-goal advantage through the halftime break and for much of the second half, the Cardinals ended any hopes for Stony Brook in the 71st minute as Reynolds controlled a short cross from Schmitt and scored inside the right post from 10 yards out for the final 3-1 margin. Through three matches, Schmitt leads the team with five points, including his pair of goals.
Louisville dominated the run of play throughout the night finishing with a 16-5 edge in shots, including a 9-2 advantage on goal. The Cardinals also had an 8-0 margin in corner kick chances in the triumph.
Up next, No. 15 Louisville will conclude its season-opening four-match homestand at Lynn Stadium with the Battle of the Bluegrass against on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., ET.
