Louisville finishes with 17-2 edge in shots; Schmitt and Johnson score goals in 2-0 triumph

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Tate Schmitt and Daniel Johnson delivered a pair of goals during a span of 86 seconds in the first half to lift No. 23 Louisville to a 2-0 win over No. 15 Kentucky on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.

In front of a crowd of 4,507, Schmitt connected for his team-leading third goal of the season in the 26th minute before Johnson scored his first career goal in the 28th minute for the Cardinals (3-1), who have won five of the last six against the Wildcats (2-1). That scoring flurry proved to be more than enough offensive production for Louisville, which finished with a 17-2 advantage in shots for its first shutout of the season.

"It's great to get wins but more importantly, I thought we played well tonight. There were a lot of things, going into the game, that we wanted to do and I thought we executed them very well," Louisville head coach Ken Lolla said to reporters following the match. "I was pleased with the effort and how we handled the game. I think tonight was our best performance, for 90 minutes."

After neither side had created a significant chance in the first 25 minutes of action, Schmitt pushed the Cardinals ahead at the 25:52 mark of the first half. After gaining control of the ball inside the left half of the 18-yard box, Schmitt's shot caromed off the far post and bounced off UK goalkeeper Callum Irving, who was still on the ground after his diving attempt to stop the shot, before rolling across the end line and into the goal.

Louisville quickly added to its advantage when Johnson, who was celebrating his 20th birthday, took a short cross from Schmitt and scored inside the right post with a rocket from 22 yards out at the 27:18 mark. It was the first collegiate goal for Johnson, who is in first season with the Cardinals after transferring from Maryland.

Through the first four matches of the season, Schmitt not only leads the Cardinals with his three goals, but also tops the club with two assists and eight points overall. Two of his three goals thus far have served as game-winners.

Louisville, which improved to 3-0 this season when leading at the half, finished with a 9-0 advantage in shots in the first half and an 8-2 edge in the second half. The Cardinals also did not allow the visiting Wildcats to send a shot on goal during the 90 minutes of play. The two sides finished with seven corner kicks each.

Up next, No. 23 Louisville will open its ACC schedule with a road match at Syracuse on Friday at 7 p.m., ET.
