Maya McClendon Takes Over on the Volleyblog
August 23, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
Hi Cards fans! It's Maya McClendon.
This preseason has thus far been the hardest two weeks of my entire life. When I tell you I can't feel my legs, I mean there is no word in my vocabulary that can accurately describe the pain I feel (or can't feel) in all of my limbs.
Despite this, today has been that best day of my entire life. There is an old Buddhist saying that summarizes to, "You can't know true pleasure without have experienced pain", and I have never embodied that ideal until today. If this tells you anything, the first great moment of my day was sleeping in until 6:15AM, and I have never felt so rested. I laid in my bed with my best friend/cat, Kora until 8:00AM and got a chance to just enjoy doing nothing before fall semester classes begin.
Shortly after I started getting my Snapstory out of the way, and almost got in a wreck because, first of all my defroster works slower than anything in the world; even slower than Erin Fairs (and that's the slowest thing I can think of right now), and secondly because you shouldn't snap and back out of a parking space, literally ever.
The next great part of my day was actually getting to Yum and seeing my favorite people on earth, my ridiculous teammates. First I saw Jasmine… don't get me started on that Daddy Long Leg of a freshman. I tried to say hi and she gave me a death stare. Not because she was angry or anything, that's just her face. And then I ran into Maggie, Tess, and Leni who crumped with me in the parking lot to celebrate our final day of Preseason. Next I went upstairs for breakfast where Zach, our strength coach made a shake that was so good I felt immortal for a second; I don't know what he put in there but I don't think it was FDA approved yet (obviously jk).
So then after clean up, and treatment we watched film on one of our practices which we were all excited for. But not because it was the first time we would watch ourselves in the film room, but because yesterday during the scrimmage Lola Arslanbekova rocketed a ball right at Mary and dead-legged her so hard she did a triple axel, and were hoping Grace had caught it on tape. I mean Mary's legs FLAILED (and yes we laughed, but only because she didn't get seriously hurt). Unfortunately, we didn't get it, but it was still nice to get back into the film room and take some constructive notes on ourselves and how we could get better.
So this practice is my favorite practice of the year because we go over all of our pregame warmups and rituals and nothing in the world gets me more excited! I cant tell you how excited we all are for tomorrow and for our first game against Illinois.
After practice it was so nice to have the rest of the day off. I went to Qdoba, and smashed that in a millisecond… (no queso Nicole, don't worry), and I got my eyebrows done and a pedicure. Thank God. I was starting to look like Wolverine.
A lot of other fun things happened today but I am literally drifting in and out of a sleep coma, but I can't wait to see all of you at our scrimmage and all of the other games this year. Thank you for reading and tolerating my dramatics.
Love you all and GO CARDS!,
