The Cardinals have as many as 11 current or former student-athletes registered for the event.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Members of the University of Louisville women's golf team are returning to a familiar scene this week for the 2015 Kentucky Open.
Held at the newly renovated UofL Golf Club, the field of 67 features 11 current or former Louisville student-athletes have registered to compete at the two-day, 36-hole tournament that begins on Tuesday. It's the first major tournament to be held at the ULGC since UofL purchased the course in December 2013.
Rising senior Laura Restrepo and rising sophomore Molly Skapik highlight the group of Cardinals competing, along with five of the program's six signees: Olivia Cason, Ellen Kehoe, Lexie Long, Meredith Moir, and Meghan Nay.
Graduates Emily Haas and Katie Petrino, who is playing as a pro, also are slated to take part in the event. Haas, who had six top-10 finishes in her senior campaign, capped her career with a 74.40-stroke average over 129 rounds of play. Petrino averaged 75.98 strokes in 126 rounds, with seven top-10 finishes.
For 2014-15, Restrepo played all 33 rounds and finished the season with a 74.52-stroke average. She had a team-best 10 rounds even or below par and totaled four top-10 finishes. Skapik played in 18 rounds and earned her first career top-10 showing at the Battle of the Bluegrass State (tied for sixth). Earlier this summer, Skapik competed in the WWGA National Amateur Championship, where she advanced to the semifinals in match play.
Louisville's decorated signing class enjoyed a wealth of success during their respective prep careers.
Cason, the 2014 regional golf player of the year, is a three-time member on the all-region team. She placed in the top five in the regional championships the last three years, while guiding Owensboro Catholic's team to the championship in 2010-11 and 2013-14. Kehoe was named 2013 KHSAA Athlete of the Year for Region 4. Moir, the third Kentucky native, led Sacred Heart to three regional championships and four KHSAA state championships. In 2014, she placed second at the regional championship with an even-par 72.
Long, a two-time Ohio Capital Conference Player of the Year, earned first team conference honors all four years of high school. Nay, a three-sport athlete in Georgia, won the 2013 county championship and continued her triumphs into 2014 by placing first at the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour.
Official practice rounds were held on Monday.
