LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Eastern Kentucky 6-1 in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Eastern Kentucky 6-1 in the second match of a doubleheader on Tuesday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards improve to 22-5, while the Colonels drop to 14-7.
"EKU was the favorite to win the OVC conference, and they looked like it today," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "They really pushed us to the brink. We were just mentally strong enough to win 6-1, but the type of tennis and the closeness of the match was not a 6-1 match. That is a much-improved team and a team that will most likely be in the NCAA tournament. We feel good that we survived a test, especially because it's the second match of the day, which is always physically and mentally grueling. I'm pleased with the guys' effort, our tennis wasn't perfect, but we competed really well and that's all I ask of them."
The Cardinals took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Chris Simich defeated Ramon van Flymen and Diogo Soares 6-1 in No. 3 doubles, before the 56th-ranked pair of Alex Gornet and Jeff Brown defeated Sebastian Mueller and Juanjo de la Llera 6-4 in the No. 1 spot.
In singles play, Luis Elizondo lost his first set 6-2, but came back to beat de la Llera 6-1, 6-2 in the next two sets to put the Cards up 2-0. Eighth-ranked Stiefelmeyer then defeated Alex Alvaro 6-2, 6-4 at No.1 before Gornet clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over van Flymen at No. 2. Simich put the Cards up 5-0 by defeating Daridge Saidi 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot, and Van Damrongsri came from behind to defeat Mueller 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in No. 4 singles. Eastern Kentucky got on the board when Soares defeated Michael Lippens 7-6(7-4), 3-6, 1-0(10-6) on court five.
The Cards return to ACC action on Friday, April 10 when they travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Boston College.
