BOSTON - The No. 28 University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Boston College 7-0 in an ACC matchup Friday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 23-5 on the season and 7-3 league play. The victory also sets a school record for most wins in the regular season.
"We played at a unique venue here at Boston College, but stayed disciplined and focused for our seventh ACC win," said Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma. "BC was a gritty team that fought to the end. Coach Wilkins is doing a great job here. Sebastian, Alex, Chris and Jeff all had a complete day winning singles and doubles. This is our 23rd win of the regular season which makes the most in program history with two more regular season matches to play. These guys have been so fun to coach this season and I am encouraging them to enjoy every moment while it lasts. A unified team like this can accomplish a lot."
The Cardinals took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Jeffrey Brown and Alex Gornet, No. 56 in the ITA doubles rankings, posted an 8-2 win over Han Workman and Kyle Childree at the top seed while Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Chris Simich teamed for an 8-4 decision over Jeffrey Melvin and Matt Wagner at the three spot.
Louisville continued to sweep through singles to claim the 7-0 win. Gornet posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Workman at No. 2 to make the score 2-0. Eighth-ranked Stiefelmeyer defeated Philip Nelson 6-2, 6-2 on court one. Simich's 6-3, 6-1 win over Childree clinched the match for the Cardinals. Albert Wagner, No. 104 in the ITA singles rankings topped Aidan McNulty 6-2, 7-5 at the three-spot. Jeffrey Brown registered a 6-1, 6-3 win over Will Turner at No. 4. The match concluded on court five where Van Damrongsri bested Kent Mukai 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10).
