LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Kayla Soles' two-run single helped lift the University of Louisville softball team to a 3-1 win over Boston College in the first of a three-game ACC series Friday evening at Ulmer Stadium.
Louisville (26-16, 13-5 ACC) and Boston College (20-20, 3-13) will conclude the series Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. The Cardinals will also celebrate senior day by honoring Whitney Arion, Brittany Duncan, Kelsi Jones and Kayla Soles prior to the start of the first game. Additionally, Sunday is Louisville's annual Pink Game to raise awareness for breast cancer.
"They have a very good pitcher and she did a tremendous job," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We chased it a little bit out of zone and that didn't help us. We were fortunate to put together a string of hits. Brittany Sims hitting the ball to the fence was a big bonus for us. And Whitney putting down that bunt certainly caught them a little off guard. We played great defense which is what we needed to do and Maryssa did a great job on the mound which is exactly what we needed from her at this point."
After a scoreless first inning, the Cardinals broke through with two runs in the second. Brittany Duncan drew a leadoff walk and Brittany Sims followed with a double to the left field fence to place runners at second and third for Kayla Soles' two-run single to give Louisville a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles got a run back in the top of the third when Megan Cooley connected on a two-out hit, stole second and came around to score on Jessie Daulton double to make the score 2-1.
The Cardinals added another run in the fifth when Kelsi Jones led off with a double and one out later, Whitney Arion beat the throw on a bunt single and an error on the play sent Jones home to give Louisville a 3-1 lead.
Maryssa Becker (12-5) got the win, surrendering one earned run on three hits and striking out six in a complete game effort. Soles was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Jones went 1 for 2 with a double and a run.
Allyson Frei (14-13) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and fanning four in 6.0 innings of work.
