Softball Splits Boston College Doubleheader
April 26, 2015 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team split a doubleheader with Boston College Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals (27-15, 14-6 ACC) clinched the series with a 1-0 win in the first game while the Eagles (21-21, 4-14) took the second game 3-0.
"I thought their pitcher did a great job today," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "The first game was a close one and we did what we needed to do to get the win, but we made poor adjustments in the second game. We had some key errors that really hurt us."

Sophomore Jordan McNary went 3 for 3 with a run and Maryssa Becker tossed a three-hit shutout to lift Louisville to a 1-0 series-clinching win over Boston College.
The Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when McNary was safe at first on an infield hit and stole second. One out later, Becker delivered an RBI single for the only run of the game. Louisville went on to put two more runners on in the first, but could not capitalize.
After allowing a leadoff single in the first, Becker retired the next 11 batters before a hit by Jordan Chimento and a walk to Chloe Sharabba put two runners on for the Eagles. An error advanced the runners, but Becker got a groundout to end the threat.
A walk to Kelsi Jones followed by a McNary's single put two on for Louisville in the second. McNary registered her third hit of the game and took second on Whitney Arion's sacrifice bunt in the fifth, but the score remained 1-0.
Becker (13-5) got the complete game shutout, scattering three hits and striking out five.
Allyson Frei took the loss, giving up one earned run on five hits and striking out seven in 6.0 innings of work. Chimento went 2 for 3 to lead the Eagles at the plate.

Taylor Coroneos reached on an error to lead off the frame and took second on Madison Paulson's sacrifice bunt. Chloe Dubocq's fielder's choice saw Corneos safe on a play at third and Megan Cooley's base hit plated Coroneos to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
With two outs in the fourth inning, Chloe Sharabba was hit by a pitch and came home on a triple by Tatiana Cortez to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Boston College's final run came in the sixth when Jordan Chimento delivered a one-out single and a two-base error sent her to third when Sharabba reached on a fielder's choice. An RBI single by Cortez made the score 3-0.
Louisville had a runner in scoring position in the first, third and fifth innings, but Frei and BC defense held the Cardinals in check to win the series finale.
Shelby McCombs (8-5) took the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits and striking out two in 5.1 innings of work. Becker held the Eagles scoreless and gave up one hit in 1.2 innings of relief.
Frei (15-14) went the distance to get the win, surrendering five hits and striking out six. Cortez went 2 for 3 with three RBIs to pace the Eagles offensively.
Louisville will return to action on Wednesday, April 29 when Western Kentucky visits Ulmer Stadium for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
