Louisville Drops Spring Match to SIUE, 1-0
April 14, 2015 | Men's Soccer
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite a strong second half effort, the Louisville men's soccer team was unable to convert on chances dropping Sunday's spring match 1-0 to visiting SIUE at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
In a match featuring mirror image 4-2-3-1 formations, the scoreless gridlock was broken only once in the 24th minute of play. An unsuccessful clearance out of the back by the Cardinals was gathered at by SIUE at midfield and driven to forward Jabari Danzy at the top of the box. Danzy brought the ball down and laid it off to a streaking Jason Hacket who finished to the back post.
The Cardinals responded with several opportunities in the remainder of the first half, but lacked the final conversion. In the 30th minute, a corner kick from Tim Kubel was redirected just over the cross bar by defender Shane Campbell. In the 36th minute, Ivan Gutierrez served a dangerous cross to Ethan Decker, who connected with a powerful header that ascended just over the bar.
In the 39th minute, Daniel Johnson created space for himself at the top of the box and hit a hopeful, bending ball that sailed over the bar. Then in the 43rd minute, a free kick taken by Kubel swerved to the high side of the near side post, saved by the SIUE goalkeeper.
The second half featured a cagey SIUE defense that dropped the line of confrontation, content to sit in and hold on to the 1-0 advantage. The tactics would ultimately pay off despite several waves of the Cardinal attack.
The best chance for Louisville came in the 81st minute, when a free kick from Kubel was lofted behind the defense, finding Campbell for another header over the bar. The Cardinals will conclude their spring exhibition schedule at home against Xavier on Saturday at 3 p.m., ET at Lynn Stadium.
