Women's Lacrosse Blanks Duquesne 17-0
March 04, 2015 | Women's Lacrosse
Kaylin Morissette tied her career high with seven goals to lead the University of Louisville women's lacrosse team to a 17-0 victory over visiting Duquesne on Wednesday at a cold and rain-soaked UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
Ashley Peacock and Brittany Read combined for five saves in the first shutout victory in program history. The Cards (4-0) allowed just seven shots on the day, five of which were saved. Duquesne drops to 1-3 on the year.
"Peacock was steady," said head coach Kellie Young. "It's hard in a game that's lopsided to be ready the whole time, and she had some really key saves today. As a whole I thought we put together back-to-back games of playing really solid defense and following our game plan."
Morissette started the scoring for the Cards just 1:17 into the first half. Hannah Koloski got on the board just 39 seconds later with an unassisted score. Morissette notched her second score of the match 1:26 later to extend the lead to three, before Brust scored her first goal of the match off of a free position shot at the 25:52 mark.
Koloski put the Cards up 5-0 with a goal off of a free position shot with 24:26 left in the first half. Just under five minutes later, Heidi Smith extended the lead with a goal assisted by Kaelyn Sclavounos. Morissette added two more goals before assisting on Brust's second goal of the game. Cortnee Daley and Morissette each added another goal to put the Cards up 11-0 at the half. Daley's goal was assisted by Brust.
Louisville outshot Duquesne 24-4 in the first half and held a 17-3 edge in shots on goal.
"Kaylin was on her A-game," said Young. "Her shot selection today was phenomenal and it shows that doing the work when nobody's watching really helps you execute on game day."
The Cards continued to put on the offensive pressure in the second half. Brust scored her third goal of the game 7:34 into the half, just moments before Morissette put the Cards up 13-0 with her sixth goal. Brust scored once again with 19:19 left to play and was assisted by Daley. Both Morissette and Brust added one more goal in the following five minutes, before Koloski secured the 17-0 win with a goal in the 18th minute of the half.
Peacock finished with three saves for the Cards, while Read stepped in and recorded two saves. Louisville outshot Duquesne 38-7 on the day and held a 26-5 advantage in shots on goal.
The Cardinals return to action this Saturday, March 7 when they host William & Mary at 1:00 p.m. at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
