Cortnee Daley scored five goals and Kelli Gerding added a career-high four goals to guide the No. 12 University of Louisville women's lacrosse team to a 18-5 victory over visiting William & Mary on Saturday afternoon at UofL Lacrosse Stadium. Louisville improves to 5-0, while the Tribe drops to 0-4.
Both defenses held strong through the first few minutes of play, but the Cards were able to break through at the 23:41 mark when Kaylin Morissette scored off of a free position shot. Faye Brust extended the lead to two goals when she scored off a free position shot just over a minute later.
"They ran two different zones on us, a flat zone and a backer zone, and our attackers kind of struggled a little bit to start the game," said head coach Kellie Young. "We have sets for it, we practice those sets, but they had a hard time getting into them and trusting them. Once we did that, once we got them to buy in, we were fine."
William & Mary trimmed the Cards' lead to one with 18 minutes remaining in the half, but Gerding made the score 3-1 less than 30 seconds later on an unassisted score. The Tribe then scored their second goal of the game, but Morissette was quick to put the Cards 4-2 with 13:25 left in the half.
Gerding scored her second goal of the game off of a free position shot at the 9:24 mark, before Daley scored two goals in less than a minute to extend the lead to five. Hannah Koloski added a score just 37 seconds later, just before Morissette scored her team-leading 19th goal of the season to make the score 9-2 going into halftime.
The Cards came out strong in the second half, scoring five consecutive goals in the first 11 minutes of play. Gerding started the scoring with a goal assisted by Brust before Daley made it 11-2 on an unassisted score. Brust added to the Cards' lead with a goal assisted by Morissette with 24:05 remaining in the game, while Heidi Smith scored three minutes later to make the score 13-2. Gerding rounded out the scoring streak with her fourth goal of the contest with 19:25 remaining. She was assisted by Brust.
William & Mary scored its first goal of the half off of a free position shot, but Daley added two consecutive scores to extend the lead to 16-3. Brust and Smith assisted her goals. The Tribe scored again off of a free position shot, but Koloski was able to tab her second score of the day with 1:30 left to play. William & Mary was able to score again with just nine seconds left to play, but the Cards secured the 18-5 win to stay perfect on the year.
Louisville outshot William & Mary 36-17 and led 28-14 in shots on goal. Ashley Peacock recorded nine saves in goal for the Cards, while Brittany Read also saw time in goal. Meredith Crizer and Alex Lista combined for 10 saves in goal for the Tribe. Along with her three goals, Morissette snagged double-digit draw controls for the third time this season, recording 12.
