No. 10 Louisville Defeats Virginia Tech 15-6

Senior Faye Brust led the Cardinals with four goals to defeat Virginia Tech 15-6 on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 7-2 on the year and 1-2 in ACC play while the Hokies fall to 5-6 on the year and 0-3 in league play.
"I am so proud of our performance today and thrilled to have earned our first ACC win," said head coach Kellie Young. "We were solid in every aspect of our game today but most notably on the draw. Kay was phenomenal but the support from the defensive end combined for a total of 20 of 23 draws. It's hard to lose when you control possession."
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 6-0 lead to begin the game. Cortnee Daley struck first with a goal just 27 seconds into the game. Faye Brust then scored two and a half minutes later for her first goals of the game. Less than a minute later Kaylin Morissette scored back-to-back goals in 16 seconds for a 4-0 Louisville lead. At the 15:45 mark of the first half, Morissette found Brust for the score and a 5-0 lead. Hannah Koloski found the back of the net five minutes later for a 6-0 Louisville lead.
Virginia Tech' s Meg Bartley scored the first goal for the Hokies with 8:49 remaining in the first half. Then two minutes later Megan Will scored to cut the lead to 6-2. Louisville answered back when Anna Kopecka found Morissette to push the lead to 7-2. Virginia Tech scored on a free position shot with 1:25 remaining in the half. With 30 seconds remaining Kelli Gerding scored for the Cardinals to end the half with an 8-3 lead.
Louisville finished the first half with an 18-8 shot advantage and an 11-1 advantage in draw controls.
The Cardinals continued to dominate on the offensive end in the second half, scoring five straight goals. Daley and Morissette connected for the first goal of the half, just one minute into play. Koloski scored on a free position shot and a minute later found the back of the net again for an 11-3 Cardinal lead.
Brust and Gerding scored for the Cardinals to take a 13-3 lead with 19:46 left in the game. Both teams traded goals before Virginia Tech's Jessi Thon scored two straight to cut the lead to 14-6. Heidi Smith scored in the final 12 seconds to secure the 15-6 win.
Morissette finished with three goals and two assists along with 12 draw controls. Koloski finished with three goals and Daley and Gerding finished with two goals for the Cardinals.
Louisville finished the game with a 30-16 shot advantage. The Cardinals also held a 20-3 draw controls advantage. Ashley Peacock collected the win and finished with four saves while Virginia Tech finished with five saves.
The Cardinals will be back in action on as they travel to Longwood on Wednesday, March 25 at 1:00 p.m.
