Kaylin Morissette and Cortnee Daley each scored five goals to lead the No. 10 University of Louisville lacrosse team to a 16-9 victory over Vanderbilt on Wednesday afternoon at UofL Lacrosse Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 6-2, while the Commodores drop to 3-5.
"We started playing like Louisville in the second half," said head coach Kellie Young. "Or defense really hunkered down. I don't know who that was playing in the first half, but we really cleaned that up in the second half. That is the sign of a good team, responding and riding that wave. We learned a lot today and we will learn a lot from the video and how we can continue to get better and get ready for Virginia Tech. That is an important game for us."
Vanderbilt opened the scoring in the first minute of play, but the Cards responded four minutes later when Faye Brust scored off of a free position shot. The Commodores then scored two more goals to go up 3-1, Hannah Koloski responded with 18:23 remaining in the half, scoring her first of three goals in the game.
Vanderbilt took a 4-2 lead with 17 minutes left in the half, but Koloski and Morissette each added a score in a nine-second span to tie the game at four. The Commodores responded with two goals of their own to take a 6-4 lead with 12:55 remaining, Daley tied the game with free position goals at the 7:28 and 6:04 marks.
The Commodores scored to take a 7-6 lead with less than five minutes left in the half, but Morissette and Brust each scored before the end of the half to give the Cards an 8-7 lead going into halftime. Kelli Gerding recorded the assist on Brust's goal.
Louisville finished the first half with a 19-12 lead in shots and an 11-5 lead in draw controls. Ashley Peacock recorded three saves in goal for the Cards, while Callahan Kent recorded six saves for Vanderbilt.
Daley extended the lead for the Cards with two unassisted scores in the first four minutes of the second half. Vanderbilt then scored on a free position shot, but Morissette scored with 23:33 remaining in the half and Daley scored just over two minutes later on an assist from Heidi Smith to give the Cards a 12-8 lead.
The Commodores scored their final goal of the game on a free position shot with just over 18 minutes left to play, but Louisville responded with four consecutive goals to finish the game. Smith scored on a Morissette assist with just over 17 minutes left to play before Morissette scored on a Brust assist just over six minutes later. Koloski and Morissette rounded out the scoring for the cards with goals at the 5:16 and 2:29 marks.
Louisville held a 35-18 advantage in shots, holding Vanderbilt to just six shots in the second half. The Cards also held a 19-8 advantage in draw controls, with Morissette pulling in 13 on the day. Peacock finished the game with four saves for the Cards, while Kent finished with 10 saves for Vanderbilt.
The Cards return to ACC play on Saturday, March 21 when they travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take on Virginia Tech.
