Men's Tennis Defeats Oregon 4-2
February 08, 2015 | Men's Tennis
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's Tennis team defeated No. 44 Oregon 4-2 in its first match of the weekend. The Cards (3-2) will now face Morehead State this afternoon at 5 p.m.
"We knew Oregon was going to come here and bring a lot of talent and energy and fight, and we were not disappointed," said Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma. "We knew how good they were and how hard they fight, but at the end I felt like we won some big points, especially Luis Elizondo losing that second set and coming back. He was up 6-0 in a breaker, but unfortunately the match was suspended. What really helped, obviously, is the doubles point and Alex Gornet getting our second point, I felt like we were in the driver's seat there. But again, they came back and it shows you how tough the Pac-12 conference is, how tough Oregon is."
Louisville took the doubles point after winning at both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Seniors Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Van Damrongsri defeated Kevin Farin and Jayson Amos at No. 1 before juniors Alex Gornet and Jeff Brown clinched the first point of the match with a 6-4 win at No. 3 over Simon Stevens and Cormac Clissold.
"The unsung hero of the match was the teammates," added Ecarma. "They really supported each other. The guys that weren't playing really kept the guys that were playing positive and strong and feeling good. The crowd wasn't a big crowd, but they were loud and proud. In certain places, like in Seattle they call it the `12th Man' because there are 11 starters, I guess we could call that the `Seventh Man' because there are six singles players out here. But the crowd was really, really good so I appreciate everybody coming out."
In singles play, Oregon won a point back when Damrongsri fell 3-6, 4-6 in the No. 5 spot to Simon Stevens, but Gornet put the Cards back on top by defeating Daniel Sardu 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) in No. 3 singles. Stiefelmeyer added another point to make the score 3-1 when he took down Kevin Farin in No. 1 singles. Senior Michael Lippens fell 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (5-7) to Oregon's Jayson Amos in No. 4 singles to pull the Ducks to within one, but senior Albert Wagner was able to mount a come-from-behind victory to secure the 4-2 win for the Cards. He defeated Daan Maasland 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 2 spot.
