The No. 43 University of Louisville men's tennis team took down No. 60 Michigan State 4-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Cards (5-2) will now take on Austin Peay this evening at 6 p.m.
"I'm really pleased with these guys," said Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma. "They executed our game plan. We wanted to come out strong in doubles, which we did. Then we said first sets, let's win a majority of our first sets. We went 6-for-6. The one thing that was unscripted today was how hard Michigan State fought back."
Louisville won the doubles point with victories by the No. 3 and No. 1 doubles teams. Seniors Albert Wagner and Chris Simich defeated Mac Roy and Michael Dube 6-1, before fellow seniors Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Van Damrongsri defeated Gijs Linders and Brett Forman to clinch the doubles point.
The Cards continued their winning ways in the singles matches, collecting wins in the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 spots. Stiefelmeyer won his match 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot, defeating Linders in straight sets. At No. 4 singles, Simich took down Harry Jadun 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) and at No. 6 singles, senior Luis Elizondo defeated Dube 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 to give the Cards the win.
"To be on the road, to lose the doubles point, to lose six straight first sets and to come out swinging, I've got to give [Michigan State] credit," said Ecarma. "They fought really hard and that's a team that's won six or seven matches in a row. A team from the Big Ten, they've got a lot of pride, they had a lot of momentum coming in here. We should have expected that they were going to give us a big fight, but I was really proud of Luis (Elizondo) closing us out at 4-0 and (Chris) Simich getting that third point to set Luis up for the clinch. So I felt really good about this team."
With the victory, Ecarma now has 390 career wins and needs 10 more to reach 400.
