LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville junior righthander Kyle Funkhouser was chosen as the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday while also being named as a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
A native of Oak Forest, Ill., Funkhouser matched a career-high with 12 strikeouts and allowed just one hit in seven shutout innings to lead the seventh-ranked Cardinals to a 5-1 season-opening win over Alabama State on Friday at the Opening Weekend Challenge in Clearwater, Florida. Funkhouser retired the final 20 batters he faced after allowing a single and a walk in the first inning. The All-American equaled his strikeout total at Temple last May and improved to 19-4 in his collegiate career with the performance.
Funkhouser was one of five pitchers named as a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week. On the conference side, Georgia Tech's Kel Johnson was selected as the ACC Player of the Week after hitting .571 with five RBIs, including three doubles and two home runs, during the opening weekend.
No. 7 Louisville (2-1) is scheduled to open its 33-game home slate at Jim Patterson Stadium on Wednesday at 3 p.m., ET against Eastern Kentucky
