Brandon Lancaster named Commodore Scramble Champion
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Louisville wrapped up play at Vanderbilt's Commodore Scramble with five wins Sunday. Freshman Brandon Lancaster was named Commodore Scramble Champion after going undefeated in the tournament with a 4-0 singles record.
"We finished with a winning record for the third straight day," said Rex Ecarma. "It has been a grind but these guys will improve their mental toughness because of it. We have to push them past their limits for growth. They all competed hard. Brandon led the way in singles. He has a super competitive nature that helps him so much in singles. He always gives me great effort and he has very bright future with Cardinal Tennis."
Lancaster capped his tournament run with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Lipscomb's Alejandro Manzanares. Freshman Christian Haushammer picked up a 6-0, 6-4 win over Vanderbilt's VIkram Chari. Sophomore Courtney Lock defeated Lipscomb's John Tougher 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Santiago Salazar topped Lipscomb's Kauai Linardi 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles action, George Hedley and Courtney Lock edged Middle Tennessee's Dima Zhymantovich and Gonzalo Rashiatore 8-7.
"Courtney and George led us with a perfect 3-0 doubles record," said Ecarma. "I was excited to try them out because they have a similar serve and volley style in doubles and it worked. They also have great chemistry. Courtney had a breakthrough weekend with a 6-1 overall record. Quang had our best individual performance with a win over SEC stalwart Rhys Johnson. There were a lot of positives this weekend and this team continues to grow weekly."
