Freshman Jill Vetere scores the game-winner for the Cardinals
RALEIGH, NC. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated NC State 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Field. Freshman Jill Vetere scored her second goal of the season in the first half to lead the Cardinals. Â
"After a challenging game on Thursday night against Virginia, it was great to get a result against NC State on the road," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Jill Vetere's goal in the first half was fantastic and it took pressure off of us heading into the half.  We played much better in the second half and we created numerous clear chances early on in the half but could not capitalize."
The Cardinal offense had the first shot of the match in the third minute by Isabella Habuda but the shot was saved. NC State then had possession and had two shots in two minutes that were saved and then went wide. Sophomore Alison Price's shot in the 10th minute was saved.
Five minutes later Vetere had a goal called back with an offsides call. The Cardinals continued to apply offensive pressure and it paid off in the 26th minute. Rachel Avant's shot was blocked and Vetere took the deflection about 30 yards out and sent a rocket through the upper 90 for a 1-0 lead.
NC State had a shot on goal in the 32nd minute but Taylor Bucklin made the save, preserving the Cardinal lead into the half.  NC State held a 7-6 shot advantage and a 2-1 corner kick advantage in the first half. Bucklin finished the half with two saves while NC State's Sydney Wootten finished with three saves.
The Cardinal offense came out early looking to add an insurance goal in the second half. Vetere and Habuda had shots go wide in the opening minutes. Bucklin was tested in the 58th minute but made the save. Possession was pretty even throughout the second half but neither team was able to convert a shot into a goal, giving the Cardinals the 1-0 road win.Â
Louisville finished with match with a 12-10 shot advantage and a4-2 corner kick advantage. Bucklin finished with four saves while Wootten finished with five saves.  Bucklin collected her fifth shutout of the season and the team's seventh on the year.Â
The Cardinals (8-7-2, 4-4-1 ACC) will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 31 as they travel to Wake Forest for at 7:00 p.m. start. Â
