Cavaliers score game-winner in 89th minute after Cardinals pulled even one minute earlier
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - After Louisville's Ethan Vanacore-Decker connected for the game-tying goal in the 88th minute, Virginia's Patrick Foss pushed the home side back ahead for good just one minute later to lift the 10th-ranked Cavaliers to a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals on Friday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium.
On a rainy and windy afternoon on the UVA campus, Foss delivered his second goal of the day scoring from near midfield on a free kick to conclude a hectic stretch of play for the Cavaliers (6-1-2, 2-1-1 ACC) and Cardinals (4-4-3, 0-1-3 ACC). Exactly one minute prior to the game-winner, Vanacore-Decker scored his first goal in the Louisville uniform with a flick header off a feed from junior Michael DeGraffenreidt to pull the road side even at 2-2.
Friday's match, which started six hours earlier than previously scheduled due to the expected inclement, included a single first half goal as Virginia's Marcus Salandy-Defour scored off a Louisville defender and into the net for his first goal of the season in his first match of 2015. With the one-goal difference holding into the halftime break, the Cardinals evened things at 1-1 in the 60th minute when junior Romilio Hernandez scored his first goal of the season and the second of his career with a long, right-footed shot into the corner.
Foss pushed Virginia back ahead at 2-1 in the 74th minute with a left-footed free kick from 40 yards out. That set the stage for the wild finish in the final three minutes of the match.
Overall, Louisville finished with an 11-9 edge in shots, including a 6-4 advantage in attempts on goal. The Cardinals also finished with an 8-6 edge in corner kick chances.
Up next, Louisville concludes a three-game road stretch with a visit to Clemson on Friday at 7 p.m., ET in a nationally televised match on ESPN3.
