Unique format in Classic tests versatility and strategy
The University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team is back in action on Friday and Saturday when it heads to the 22nd annual SMU Classic to compete in the  two-day event with an unusual format that allows only eight swimmers and one diver to compete in six lanes.
The Classic will take place in Lewisville Oct. 16-17 Â and features UCLA, Florida State, Missouri, Louisville, TCU and host SMU. Â Live results can be seen here: http://www.smumustangs.com/livestats/w-swim/smu-classic-2015/index.htm
Louisville placed sixth at the 2015 NCAA Championship, and was fourth in its first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Missouri (14th), UCLA (23rd) and FSU (24th) also finished inside the nation's top 25. Louisville has been part of the Classic since 2009, earning runner-up honors last season.
U of L is led by Kelsi Worrell and Andrea Cottrell, who led the Cardinals to a No. 6 finish at NCAAs last season. Worrell won the 100- and 200-fly and set an American Record along the way. Cottrell was an ACC champion, All-American and a member of the USA National Team at the World University Games. Along with Worrell and Cottrell, the Cards will take Rachael Bradford Feldman, Mallory Comerford, Alina Kendzior, Andrea Kneppers, Abigail Houck, Marah Pugh, and diver Andrea Acquista.
It is the first meet of the year for the UCLA Bruins, who finished 23rd in the NCAAs last year. UCLA, which was 7-4 in dual meets last year was ranked 16th in the last CSCAA poll, finished fifth at the 2015 Pac-12 Championships.
Missouri finished 8th in the SEC Championship last year setting 10 school records, including two from then-freshman Sharli Brady (200 fly and 400 IM).
Florida State is coming off a season-opening loss to Minnesota, the reigning Big Ten champs. Sophomore Alexi Smith picked up a win in the 50 free, posting a 23.67.
The Mustangs, the reigning AAC Champions, placed third at the 2014 with the Mustangs posting 12 NCAA 'B' standard qualification times.
