Skapik, Women's Golf Have Impressive Showing at Tar Heel Invitational

Molly Skapik shot an even-par 72 for the second-consecutive day and tied for third.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Head coach Courtney Trimble laid out a plan for the University of Louisville women's golf team heading into the Tar Heel Invitational that boasted arguably the best competition in the country.
The Cardinals executed it nearly to perfection – in all aspects.
Sophomore Molly Skapik shot the best three-round score of her collegiate career, tying for third in the tournament, and guided Louisville to a third-place finish in the team standings on Sunday in Chapel Hill, N.C. Four of the five student-athletes in the lineup placed in the top 30.
Notably, Louisville finished ahead of a host of Golfweek's top-50 programs, including No. 2 Alabama, No. 11 Virginia, No. 14 Tennessee, No. 28 Oregon, No. 30 LSU, No. 34 South Carolina, and No. 35 Auburn.
Skapik completed the tournament with a collegiate-best 2-under-par 214, carding a personal-best 2-under-par 70 on Friday and consecutive even-par 72 rounds on Saturday and Sunday. She tied for the fourth-best averages on par-3 (2.83) and par-4 (4.00) holes, while putting in for par 41 times – the second most of the 96-player field.
“I know Molly is disappointed she didn't win, but she went toe to toe all day with one of the best players in the country,” Trimble said, “so she has much to be proud of.”
Seniors Laura Restrepo and Katie Mitchell shot their best rounds of the tournament on Sunday, producing a 1-over-par 73. Each finished the three-day event at 6-over-par 222 to tie for 18th. Mitchell and Restrepo each tapped in for par 38 times.
Freshman Lexie Long rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals, tying for 29th with an 8-over-par 224. Over her final 18, Long had one birdie and shot par on 13 holes.
“Our team put together three really solid rounds and proved to themselves that they can play with some of the best teams in the country,” Trimble added. “We look forward to building off of this event and continuing to work hard for our home tournament.”
The Cardinals continue fall play on in two weeks on their home course, playing host to the Cardinal Cup at the UofL Golf Club from Oct. 19-20. Live results will be available on Golfstat.com.
