SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's golf team took a commanding first-round lead and sits atop the standings after two rounds of action at the Cardinal Cup in Simpsonville, Ky.
The Cardinals' Black Team, paced by Laura Restrepo and Olivia Cason, compiled a 1-under-par 287 in the opening round – a season best – to earn a nine-stroke advantage over Florida State. Louisville then put together a 9-over-par 297 in the second round at the UofL Golf Club on Monday, giving the team a one-stroke lead heading into the third and final round on Tuesday.
Through 36 holes, the Cardinals boast a 15-team best 128 pars and rank in the top three in par-3 (3.08), par-4 (4.16), and par-5 (4.98) holes.
Restrepo played a major part in keeping the Cardinals in position to win their fourth-consecutive Cardinal Cup title, shooting a 1-under-par 143. Her 2-under-par 70, aided by three birdies on the front nine, was the best score in the first round. A senior, Restrepo is tied for third and trails the leader, Wisconsin's Brooke Ferrell, by three shots.
Cason, who is tied for eighth in the tournament, shot a 1-under-par 71 after the first 18 holes and finished the day at 1-over-par 145. Along with her 26 pars and five birdies, she is averaging a 2.88 on par-3 holes and a 4.88 on par-5 holes.
Katie Mitchell and Shannon Gramley rounded out the Cardinals' scoring, tying 12th and 25th, respectively. Mitchell, who leads the 81-player field with 30 pars, had a two-round score of 4-over-par 146, while Gramley posted an 8-over-par 150.
Lexie Long had a stellar first day on the course, tying a season low of 2-under-par 70 in the first round. She followed that performance with a 2-over-par 74, putting her at even par through 36 holes. The freshman, who already has a pair of top-30 finishes this season, is tied for sixth.
In addition to Long, the Louisville Red Team received another remarkable performance from classmate Jacqueline Twitty. The Chapin, S.C., native bounced back from a slow start to logging a 4-under-par 68 – tied for the best one-round score in the tournament. She connected on five birdies, pushing her into a tie for 15th.
The Cardinal Cup resumes on Tuesday, with a shotgun tee time set for 9:15 a.m. ET. Louisville's Black Team is paired with Florida State and Notre Dame, while the Red Team will be playing with Illinois and Wisconsin. Live results are available through Golfstat.com.
