Skapik Helps Women’s Golf Push into Tie for Second at Tar Heel Invitational

Molly Skapik shot an even-par 72 and is second overall on the leaderboard.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Molly Skapik showed signs her freshman season as having the capability of being a dominant golfer.
Through two rounds of the Tar Heel Invitational against some of the best competition in the country, the sophomore is second on the individual leaderboard after carding an even-par 72 on Saturday, trailing only last year's ACC champion, and has pushed Louisville into a tie for second against an 18-team field that boasts 13-ranked programs.
Skapik, a Miamisburg, Ohio, native, chipped in a pair of birdies through her first five holes and then tapped in for par through her last 12-consecutive holes to close the day. One of her best feats of the day was going the final nine holes – that featured steady rain – without a bogey.
She is coming off Friday's performance, when she shot a career-best 2-under-par 70, giving her a two-day score of 2-under-par 142. Over the two-day stretch, Skapik has recorded five birdies, is tied for the tournament lead with 28 pars, and holds the best par-4 average at 3.90.
“Molly has been playing very solid the last two weeks and has been working extremely hard,” head coach Courtney Trimble said, “so I am happy for her that her hard work is paying off.”
Trimble was just as pleased with the overall team's performance, as Louisville's final three scorers are each tied for 25th.
“It was our team goal to be in the final pairing for tomorrow, so we are pleased to have achieved this goal and are looking forward to a great day tomorrow,” Trimble added.
Senior Laura Restrepo put together a 2-over-par 74, earning birdies on Nos. 5 and 6. The Panama native, who owns a two-round score of 5-over-par 149, putted in for par on her final six holes of the day, giving her 25 for the tournament.
Senior Katie Mitchell, entering tomorrow also with a 5-over-par 149, started Saturday with five-consecutive pars before hitting her first of three bogeys on the day. She rebounded with a birdie on a par-4 hole and finished the front nine at 1-over-par.
Lexie Long, one of the Cardinals' two freshmen in the lineup, carded a 4-over-par 76 in the second round. Despite playing in just her third collegiate tournament, Long showed composure early. She hit a bogey to open the day and then a double-bogey on No. 4, but came back with two birdies and three pars over her next five holes. She finished the back nine at 3-over-par.
Louisville concludes play at the event on Sunday, teeing off at 9:15 a.m. ET with Duke and Arkansas. Live results are available through Golfstat.com.
