Volleyball Set to Host Rival UK
September 08, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
The No. 24 ranked University of Louisville volleyball team will take on rival No. 16 Kentucky Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. in the KFC Yum! Center.
The Cardinals are attempting to set a regular season match attendance record for the KFC Yum! Center which currently stands at 5,007.
The Cardinals, 3-2, are coming off a second place finish in the Active Ankle Challenge last weekend in Cardinal Arena. Louisville beat Tennessee State and long-time rival Cincinnati in sweeps before falling to Appalachian State. UofL has an upset win under its belt, when the Cards took down No. 12 Minnesota in Minneapolis in the season's opening weekend.
The upset helped freshman Maggie DeJong earn ACC Freshman of the Week honors. DeJong was instrumental in the Cardinal's upset win over No. 12 Minnesota in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Louisville had four players record double-digit kills for the match, including DeJong with 11. Maggie hit a blistering .567 for the weekend, including a .700 outing against No. 6 Wisconsin.
The No. 16 Kentucky volleyball team finished its season-opening homestand with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 win over Creighton in the final match of the Commonwealth Classic Saturday night in Memorial Coliseum. Sophomore Anni Thomasson notched her fourth double-double of the season as the Wildcats (5-1) tallied their third sweep of the year to cap a three-match weekend. Junior Shelby Workman, who led the team in kills all three matches, and senior libero Jackie Napper were named to the All-Tournament Team. Kentucky placed second at the Commonwealth Classic with wins over Creighton and Northern Iowa and a loss to the event's champion, sixth-ranked USC.
Napper will join Louisville starters Katie George and Courtney Robison in an Assumption High School reunion of sorts. All three played for Assumption Coach Ron Kordes, who is the father of UofL head coach Anne Kordes, herself an Assumption grad.
