Sophomore Andrew Brody scored Louisville's goal in the second half of Sunday's loss to the Columbus Crew Reserves.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Despite a flurry of chances in the final 10 minutes of the match, the Louisville men's soccer team couldn't find the equalizer falling 2-1 to the Columbus Crew Reserves at Obetz Training Center on Sunday.
"It was a great opportunity to expose our players to a higher level," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "In addition to competing at that level, these games give our players the chance to be seen by MLS coaches."
Louisville's line-up again featured a young group with five freshmen and two newcomers starting and playing the full 90 minutes. The Crew struck first in 10th minute as midfielder Justin Meram drove down the flank and slotted a low pass to forward Adam Bedell. Bedell collected the pass and finished on the backside past goalkeeper Joachim Ball.
The Cardinals had four shots on goal in the first half, the best of which came from a corner kick in the 27th minute. Midfielder Ben Strong played a looping ball to Louie Berra on the backside of the top of the box. Berra hit a driven volley to the back post that was saved off the line by a Crew defender.
Louisville came out of halftime energized and struck back in the 51st minute. After a combination play through the midfield, Strong beat a defender and slotted a streaking Andrew Brody into the box. Brody set himself up with his first touch then finished it high into the side netting.
The game-winner for the Crew came in the 57th minute. After a quick throw-in caught the Cardinals off guard, the Crew's Ryan Finley dribbled to the goal line and picked out Adam Bedell at the top of the box. Bedell hit another shot to the back post for his second goal of the match.
Though Louisville created a series of scoring opportunities down the stretch, they couldn't find the back of the net and the score remained 2-1 at the final whistle. "We handled ourselves well today and created enough chances to win the game," said Lolla. "We most definitely grew because of the opportunity."
