LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A penalty kick by forward Will Vitalis in the 89th minute lifted the Louisville men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Lindsey Wilson in the final home game of the 2014 spring season on Sunday.
It was the second goal of the match and the third of the spring for Vitalis, who scored his first goal on Sunday just before halftime to send the Cardinals to the locker room up 1-0. Louisville kicked-off the game with five freshmen and two newcomers in the starting line-up.
"The game was very beneficial for our growth as a team," said Cardinals' head coach Ken Lolla. "We had a lot of young players experiencing time that significantly contributed to their development."
Lindsey Wilson's lone goal of the game came from a free-kick at the top of the box in the 73rd minute. Lindsey Wilson's midfielder struck a bending ball around the wall outside the reach of Louisville goalkeeper Joachim Ball.
"The way the players responded to the challenge of playing an older and experienced team was very positive," said Louisville associate head coach Mario Sanchez. "Will Vitalis has been a bright spot as he continues to perform and score goals. A lot of credit also goes to Ben Strong and Louie Berra for solid performances in the midfield."
"Lyndsey Wilson presented unique challenges that forced our young players to figure out solutions," explained Lolla. "Under difficult circumstances and having limited subs, we found a way to get a result, which was very positive."
The Cardinals will continue their exhibition schedule on April 6 in a road match against the Columbus Crew and that will be followed by a visit to SIU-Edwardsville on April 12. The spring schedule will end for Louisville on April 19 at Akron.
