Softball Rolls Past Ohio State and Ohio University

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Ohio State 11-5 and set a new school record for runs scored in a game with a 22-4 win over Ohio University Sunday evening at Ulmer Stadium. Senior Katie Keller was 7 for 9 with five runs to lead the Cardinals on the day. UofL (12-6) will face Illinois State Monday at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
"I think overall today we did a great job swinging the bats," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We hit the ball hard and did a great job base-running. I thought we played solid defense today."
Louisville 11 - Ohio State 5
Senior Katie Keller went 4 for 5 with two runs and freshman Maryssa Becker went 1 for 2 with three RBIs and was credited with the win as Louisville defeated Ohio State 11-5 in their first game of the day.
The Cards jumped to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first when Whitney Arion delivered a one-out bunt single and Kelsi Jones followed with a hit. A walk to Brittany Duncan loaded the bases for Maryssa Becker's two-run double. Back-to-back RBI singles by Taner Fowler and Maggie Ruckenbrod scored Duncan and Becker.
Louisville added three runs to the lead in the second when Katie Keller led off with an infield single and took second on an error on the play. Arion followed with an RBI single to make the score 5-0. Jones stepped up to the plate and launched her fourth home run of the season over the left field fence to increase the lead to 7-0.
Ohio State put up a four-spot in the top of the third. Walks to Melaina Saalfeld, Anna Kirk and Taylor Watkins loaded the bases for Taylor Watkins whose walk put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard. Cammi Prantl's two-run double and Evelyn Carrillo's sacrifice fly made the score 7-4.
The Cardinals tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Morgan Meyer and Keller registered back-to-back singles to open the inning and Arion's sacrifice bunt moved the runners. A walk to Jones loaded te bases and Duncan's walk plated Meyer. Becker followed with a sacrifice fly to bring Keller home and make the score 9-4.
The Buckeyes got a run back in the top of the sixth. Caitlin Conrad singled and moved to third on Erika Leonard's double. Jayla Saibene's sacrifice fly sent Conrad home to make it a 9-5 game.
Louisville added a pair of runs in to bottom of the second. Hannah Kiyohara connected on a one-out hit and Morgan Meyer walked to set up Keller's RBI double. Arion followed with a sacrifice fly to bring Meyer home and increase the lead to 11-5.
Becker (4-0) got the win, allowing one earned run on three hits in 3.0 innings of relief. Tiarra Sanabria gave up one earned run in 2.0 innings of relief. Starter Caralisa Connell surrendered three earned runs and struck out two in 2.0 innings. Arion was 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs. Jones was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs. The Cardinals had 11 hits in the game with every player in the lineup accounting for at least one hit and a run or an RBI.
Olivia O'Reilly (1-2) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 1.0 innings. Prantl was 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the Buckeyes (9-11) offensively.
Louisville 22 - Ohio 4 (5 innings)
In game two, the Cardinals used a season high 18 hits to score a school record 22 runs in a 22-4 victory over Ohio. Junior Brittany Duncan was 3 for 3 with four runs and four RBIs while senior Taner Fowler was 3 for 4 with four runs - both tied the school record for runs scored in a game.
Ohio (13-12) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Casie Hutchinson drew a two-out walk to set up Alex Basquez's home run.
The Cards quickly answered with nine runs in the home half of the first. Katie Keller doubled and Whitney Arion walked and Kelsi Jones followed with her fourth homer of the season to give Louisville a 3-2 lead. An error allowed Maryssa Becker to reach. Duncan and Fowler singled to load the bases and Becker crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Hannah Kiyohara belted out a two-run double. Brittany Sims followed with a hit. Keller's RBI single plated Kiyohara. Becker's two-run double gave the Cardinals a 9-2 lead.
The Bobcats added a run in the third when Dakota Pyles walked and scored on Alyssa Wolfe's double to make it a 9-3 game.
Louisville tacked on two more runs in the second. Duncan led off with a hit and Fowler doubled to put runners on for Kiyohara's two-run single, increasing the lead to 11-3
UofL used six hits - including a three-run homer by Duncan - four walks and two errors to put up an 11-spot in the third inning.
Ohio added a run in the fourth when Pyles and Wolfe delivered back-to-back singles and scored on Hutchinson's single for the 22-4 final.
Rachel LeCoq (5-3) got the win , allowing three runs on three hits and struck out two in 3.0 innings. Tiarra Sanabria gave up one run on three hits and struck out three in 2.0 innings of relief.
Savannah Dorsey (10-8) took the loss, giving up six runs, five earned, on four hits in the first inning. Wolfe was 2 for 2 with an RBI while Basquez was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Ohio drops to 13-12 on season.
