Softball Falls 5-2 to Illinois State

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team fell 5-2 to Illinois State Monday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The loss snaps the Cardinals' season-high seven game win streak.
The Redbirds (8-14) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Kolby Hoffman registered a one-out single and came around to score when Kelsey Turczyn reached on a two-out three-base error. Kara Repp's RBI hit added to the lead.
The Cards (12-7) answered in the bottom of the third. Katie Keller delivered a one-out single, moved to second on a passed ball and crossed the plate on a double by Whitney Arion. One out later, Maryssa Becker's RBI single brought Arion home to even the score at 2-2.
Illinois State put up a three-spot in the fifth when Turczyn was hit by a pitch and took second on Repp's single. Kaitlyn Knary walked to load the bases with no outs. Lauren Canopy was hit by a pitch to send Turczyn home. One out later, Jordan de los Reyes connected on a two-run single to give the Redbirds a 5-2 lead.
Louisville had runners in scoring position each of their final three innings, but could not push a run across, stranding nine in the game.
Rachel LeCoq (5-4) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on two hits. Maryssa Becker gave up two earned runs on two hits and struck out a career-high nine batters in 6.2 innings of work. Arion was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Keller was 2 for 4 with a run and Becker was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Regan Romshek (6-7) got the win, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and striking out two in 7.0 innings. Repp was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Louisville (12-7) and Illinois State (8-14) will meet in a single game Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
