Softball Powers Past Illinois State 7-3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Brittany Duncan went 2 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs to help lead the University of Louisville softball team to a 7-3 win over Illinois State Tuesday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cardinals (13-7)used six hits to take a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. Keller delivered a leadoff single and took second on Whitney Arion's sacrifice bunt. One out later, Maryssa Becker walked to place two runners on for Duncan's two-out three run homer. Maggie Ruckenbrod followed with a double and came around to score on Taner Fowler's double. Hannah Kiyohara's RBI single brought Fowler home.
Illinois State (8-15) got three runs back in the top of the third. Brittny Drish reached on a fielder's choice and Laura Canopy was hit by a pitch. Regan Romshek's RBI hit plated Drish. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third for Jordan de los Reyes' RBI single. Stephanie Gallant's sacrifice fly brought Romshek home to make it a 5-3 game.
Kelsi Jones connected on a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. Her team-best sixth home run of the season gave the Cards a 6-3 lead.
Duncan led off the bottom of the fifth with her second homer of the game and fourth of the season to make the score 7-3.
Caralisa Connell (4-3) got the win, scattering two hits and striking out six in 4.1 innings of relief. Rachel LeCoq gave up three earned runs on four hits and struck out five in 2.2 innings.
Taylor Baxter (1-9) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits in 2.2 innings. Romshek went 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI to lead the Redbirds.
