Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 to Boston College
October 12, 2014 | Women's Soccer
Boston College scored in the fifth minute of play and the University of Louisville women's soccer team was unable to find the equalizer in a 1-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
"I wasn't really pleased with the result because I thought we played fearful," head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes said. "We were scared in all honesty in the first half, specifically with the first goal. So unfortunately, that's the way the game went. I thought we got better at the end of the first half and in the second half, but it was too much too late."
Boston College (9-6-0, 2-4-0) took the early lead over Louisville (5-6-2, 2-2-2) when Hayley Down dribbled the ball through four Cardinal defenders and buried it in the goal. From then on, both teams had chances throughout the half.
The Cardinals' best chance of the first half came when sophomore Kari Weinland took a long shot from the right side of the goal, only to see the Eagles' keeper make the leaping save. Weinland finished the game with a team-leading seven shots.
Boston College finished the half with a 4-2 shot advantage and a 3-1 corner advantage. Louisville goalkeeper Paige Brown made one save in the first half, while Boston College's Alex Johnson finished with two saves.
The Cardinals came out strong in the second half, rattling off two shots in the first six minutes of play. Louisville's most promising play in the half came when freshman Darby Schwarz passed the ball up to Weinland, who had a one-on-one with the keeper but the shot went high in the 58th minute.
Louisville finished the match with a 9-8 shot advantage while also leading in corner kicks 4-3. Brown finished with two saves, while Johnson and Darien Dunham combined for five saves and the shutout for Boston College.
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 15 when they host Northern Kentucky in a 7:00 p.m. matchup at Lynn Stadium.
