Women's Soccer Defeats Northern Kentucky 1-0
October 15, 2014 | Women's Soccer
Kari Weinland scored off of a corner kick in the 17th minute of play to lead the University of Louisville Women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Northern Kentucky on Wednesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
"I'm definitely glad we got the win, but looking at the 90 minutes, it showed we still got a lot of work to do," head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes said. "In the first half, I was pleased with the performance, but not with our efficiency. In the second half, I was not happy with our discipline at all."
Louisville (6-6-2) held possession for most of the first half and did not allow Northern Kentucky (5-7-3) to record a shot. The Cardinals' had a flurry of shots at the beginning of the match, beginning in the 11th minute when junior Rachel Avant's shot from far out on the right side hit the left post. Weinland's shot just over two minutes later was saved by the Norse goalkeeper, while senior Erin Yenney's shot sailed high of the goal.
The Cardinals took the 1-0 lead with 28:40 left in the first half when Yenney sent a corner kick into the box to a waiting Weinland. Weinland then headed the ball into the right side of the net for the score.
The Cardinals outshot the Norse 12-0 in the first half and also held the 10-1 advantage in corners. Sophomore keeper Paige Brown was not forced to make a save in the first half for the Cardinals, while Brooke Shocker made five saves for Northern Kentucky.
Northern Kentucky came out with more energy in the second half, however Louisville was still able to limit any offensive opportunities from the Norse. Freshman Kaela Dickerman had the Cardinals' best opportunity of the half when she took a hard shot from outside of the box in the 65th minute of play, but the Northern Kentucky keeper was able to save it before the ball could land in the bottom right corner of the goal. Despite the Cardinals' dominating performance, they were unable to connect again.
Louisville finished the match with a 21-4 advantage in shots and an 18-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Brown recorded two saves and the shutout for the Cardinals, while Shocker finished the match with nine saves.
The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, Oct. 19 when they take on No. 3 Virginia at Lynn Stadium. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
