Brooke Mattingly's seven kills and an ace were not enough as the No. 17-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team fell 25-20, 26-24, 25-19 to the University of Northern Iowa in the second match of the Fargo Doublewood Inn Classic Saturday morning on the campus of North Dakota State.
Louisville hit just .091 with Maya McClendon adding seven kills and Janelle Jenkins recording six kills. Setter Hannah Kvitle had two aces and 11 assists. Emily Juhl had two blocks, four kills and two aces. UNI, 2-4, hit .250, outblocked the Cards 6-5 and weathered their own 10 service errors.
U of L fell victim to a 9-0 run in the first set to go down 19-10. The Cards battled back with aggressive serving to within five at 22-17 to force a UNI timeout. Randi Ewing had one of her four kills in the set to get the Cards to 23-19 but UNI scored and a back row attack call scuttled the comeback. U of L held UNI to .167 hitting but hit just .000 itself. Juhl had two aces in the set.
U of L fell behind 10-5 in the second set but had a 7-0 run to go up one at 12-10. The teams traded points down the stretch and with U of L tying at 24. UNI hit a roll shot and blocked a U of L attack for the 26-24 win. The Cards hit .065 in that set.
UNI hit .484 in the final set and kept the pressure on the Cardinals who were within two at 16-14 but could get no closer, falling 25-19.
