
Gardner Chosen as BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Louisville junior designated hitter Jeff Gardner was selected as BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday following his outstanding work at the plate for the nationally ranked Cardinals.
Gardner (Louisville, Ky./Whitefield Academy) hit .692 (9-for-13) with two home runs, three doubles, six RBI and three runs scored in four games last week. His best game came on Tuesday when he was 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored to lead Louisville to a 12-5 road win over then-No. 15 Kentucky. For the season, Gardner has lifted his average to .360 overall with three home runs, 20 RBI and seven doubles.
This week's honor marks the fifth time in 10 weeks this season a Louisville player has earned one of the league's weekly awards. Junior infielder Ty Young and junior outfielder Adam Engel have each been selected at BIG EAST Player of the Week, while junior right-hander Jeff Thompson has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on two occasions.
Up next, No. 11 Louisville will open a five-game homestand with a midweek showdown against No. 3 Vanderbilt in the annual Battle of the Barrel on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., ET. Admission is free for the game, which will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
