Louisville, Ky. - Hey Cardinal fans! What a successful week of soccer we just had. It all started on Tuesday where we took on Ohio State. After losing to Kentucky, we were all hungry to get back on the winning side.
The game started and it didn't take too long until we were on the scoreboard. Marlon Hairston gathered a rebound off of his initial shot to put us ahead 1-0. About 20 minutes later we made it 2-0. Brock Granger got the ball wide and played me on an overlap, where I crossed it to Will Vitalis and he headed it in for the 2-0 going into halftime.
The second half started and we knew the next goal was the most important. Five minutes into the second half Paolo DelPiccolo took a free kick and sent it to the back post. Andrew Farrell won the ball and headed back across the goal to Zach Foxhoven who finished the play off. Thirty seconds later it was 4-0. After a cross from the right by Luis Ramirez, Vitalis got the ball and passed it to me and I tucked it into the near post.
Wednesday was our off day, meaning we did not have to report for training at 7:45 a.m. Someone must have forgot to tell this to Daniel Keller. He mistakenly went to training at the normal time, just to find out that he could have been sleeping in. What great roommates he has not to inform him that we do not have practice. (I am guilty of being one of those roommates.)
The next few days were recovery days and prep days for us to get ready for the BIG EAST opener against undefeated Notre Dame. While most of us get some knocks and bruises during the games, no one got a worse bruise this week than freshman Marlon Hairston. This bruise was on his neck. Someone got him pretty good. I think you guys can figure out what I am talking about.
Saturday finally arrived and all that was on our minds was to get three points in the BIG EAST Opener. Nothing else would be acceptable. The first half started out pretty even. We were finally able to break the deadlock when Vitalis' shot was saved, but Dylan Mares was there to collect the rebound and power the header home. And by power I mean an off-speed shot that may or may not have reached the back of the net.
The second half started and Notre Dame was awarded a penalty, which they converted. About 15 minutes later we were awarded a penalty of our own. Andrew Farrell stepped up and put it past the keeper for a 2-1 lead, which would eventually be the final score.
This week we only have one game to prepare for on Sunday at Rutgers. You guys can catch it live on CBS Sports Network at 1:00 p.m.!
As a side note for anyone that was at the Ohio State game. Yes, there must have been a sniper in the crowd in both the first and second half. I swear that Brock and I did not just fall down on our own.
