What's up Card fans! It's Welch here. Caitlin Welch that is, but just call me Welch!
Today wasn't like the other 10 days you've been hearing about. In fact, it was the first day of our actual season! This is the time our team has been so anxious for. We have seven days until our first game and we couldn't be more ready. Today would be a day Kaitlynn James would call, GAME DAY! This morning we woke up, had a good nutritious, healthy breakfast. Shortly after, it was time for the team to meet and watch film! To refresh our minds, we went over scouting reports and what to look for before we play our opponent! Our coaching staff puts a lot of hours and work in to make sure they have the most prepared team in the nation. After 30 minutes of focus and dedication, we then headed over to Cardinal Arena to practice for tonight's RED/WHITE scrimmage. Today's practice is a little different than most. On game days we have one hour practices that we call "serve and pass". The team spends an hour reviewing serve receive in each rotation as well as serving to zones that are given from Coach Anne!
After a strong hour of hard work, the team headed over to University Club on campus to have a filling pre-game meal. We had salad, pasta, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and fruit! As Coach Lee would say, this is family time! No phones are allowed because it is a time for the team to focus on the game ahead of us and for us to communicate within each other.
Once pre-game meal was over, the team had a nice break before it was time to play! We all went back to our rooms to get a nice nap in so we were all rested in order to put on the best performance we could! Before you knew it, it was 5:30 and we were greeting our Alumnae. It was so good to see so many people that have been a part of University of Louisville volleyball and helped get the program to where it is now. Without their help and support, our program wouldn't keep growing the way it has been! WIth a good meet and greet session completed, it was then time for the team to start warm ups and game time! I looked around to each player on the team before we started, and with everyone's look in their eyes, I could tell every player was anxious and ready to play! It was about that time folks, we were ready to show you what UofL volleyball is all about this year! Although the Alumnae didn't participate on the court, we knew they were in the stands watching! The team scrimmaged each other with a couple of the guys a part of our staff participating. Unfortunately, our volunteer coach Alex Wilharm sprained his ankle within the first game. Word of mouth is he is OK! With three sets played and strong effort put in by everyone, Coach Anne and Lee were very proud and just as anxious as we were to get the real thing started!
We can't wait to see you guys next weekend while we face Western Kentucky, Morehead, and last but definitely not least, Penn State!
Thanks for reading!
