Louisvill e, Ky. - The Louisville Cardinal's men soccer team over the past few years has established itself as one of the premier new comers and a force to be reckoned with in Division I soccer. The team has set many milestones and each year the expectations are being set higher and higher. One reason for these expectations is the amount of players that Louisville is producing into the MLS. This past draft, the Cardinals had four seniors who were selected in the 2012 MLS Super Draft. They were the only school with three players drafted in the first round and the only school with four drafts picks. The University of Louisville now has a total of seven players in the MLS; Adrian Cann, Freddie Bruan, Aaron Horton, Nick DeLeon, Austin Berry, Colin Rolfe, Kenney Walker.
Cann was selected 16th overall by the Colorado Rapids in the 2004 MLS Super Draft, he later joined his current team Toronto FC in 2010 as a free agent. In 2012, Cann has played in six games while earning a start in each of them. He has logged 495 minutes while also registering one shot. Toronto FC is 10th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 5-11-4.
Bruan was one of 62 players who were invited to the 2010 MLS Super Draft. He ended up joining the Portland Timbers U-23s development team. Once Bruan completed a season with them, the Timbers called him up to the club team and signed him in 2011. During the 2012 season Bruan has played in three matches for a total of 86 minutes and recorded one shot. The Portland Timbers are ninth in the Western Conference with a record of 5-11-4.
Horton spent the 2009-10 season with CSA and was a member of the Columbus Crew's 2010 USL Super 20s National Championship team, where he was named tournament MVP. The following year, Horton signed a multi-year deal with the Crew and was touted as the first 'Home Grown Player' in club history. Horton has yet to appear in a match during the 2012 season. The Columbus Crew is sixth in the Eastern Conference with 25 points and a record of 7-7-4.
DeLeon was selected seventh in the first round by D.C. United in the 2012 MLS Super Draft. The midfielder has seen action in 15 matches, while getting the starting nod in 12 games. DeLeon is having an impressive rookie season by accounting for 1017 minutes and found the back of the net three times, which ranks him fifth on the team. He has also has dished out three assists and has recorded one game-winning goal this year. D.C. United is fourth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 10-7-3. As a team they have 33 points and a goal difference of seven, which ranks as one of the best in the MLS.
Berry was the ninth pick in the first round by the Chicago Fire in the 2012 MLS Super Draft. The Defender has played and started in 14 matches. During his rookie year, he has 1260 minutes, two goals, nine shots, and three shots on goal. Through 20 games the Fire has compiled a record of 9-7-4 and is ranked fifth in the Eastern Conference. As a team, they have 31 points and have only allowed 22 goals thus far, which ranks as one of the lowest totals in the league.
Rolfe was the 18th pick in the first round by the Houston Dynamo. Rolfe is sitting behind a talented group of forwards and is currently playing for Houston's reserve team. The forward has played in six games while earning one start. He has helped the reserve team to a record of 4-1-1 and he has recorded 205 minutes, three goals, and one assist. The Houston Dynamo ranks third in the Eastern Conference with a record of 9-5-7.
Walker was picked by the MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy with the 38th pick in the second round in the 2012 MLS Super Draft. In his only game as a rookie, Walker earned his first career start and registered 45 minutes. The LA Galaxy is in fifth place in the Western Conference with a 9-10-3 record. As a team they have 30 points and have scored 38 goals, which is the second most in the league.
