University of Louisville sophomore Rebecca Shine is ranked No. 103 as the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings of the 2012 spring season were released on Jan. 3. It is the highest national ranking for a U of L women's singles player.
"Becca breaking into the national rankings is a huge accomplishment for her and the women's tennis program. She is ranked No. 103 in the nation out of about 3000 Division I players, that puts her into the elite category," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "The fact that when she came out of high school she was not considered an elite player but has turned herself into an elite level college player in just a year and half time, is a great tribute to her work ethic and willingness to make changes to her game. I have coached tennis at the University of Louisville for 17 years and I have never had a player improve as much as she has. The scary thing about it is, she is only midway through her sophomore year. She still has a lot more potential in her, so to say I am proud of her would be a major understatement."
Shine helped put herself on the national radar when she won the Draw A Singles at the prestigious Michigan State Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. last fall. She also won the MSU Draw B doubles championship paired with Gabrielle Duncan.
