
Volleyball Opens Home Slate with Ole Miss

The University of Louisville volleyball team opens the home slate, playing host to Ole Miss, Wichita State and Eastern Illinois at the Crowne Plaza Cardinal Classic this weekend in Cardinal Arena.
The Cardinals are 2-1 after a strong showing at last weekend's Georgia Tech Courtyard by Marriott Classic where they beat Kansas State and Tennessee Tech. Gwen Rucker and Emily Juhl took home All-Classic Honors. BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Lola Arslanbekova was an offensive threat as well with 36 kills, three aces and four blocks.
First up for the Cardinals are the Rebels, who are 0-2 overall and are coming off of losses against Texas and Pepperdine. First serve is schedule for 7:30 on Sept. 2, at Cardinal Arena. Ole Miss is hitting .102 as a team are led offensively by Allegra Wells who is averaging 2.71 kills per set. Look for setter Amanda Philpot, who is averaging 7.57 assists to run the show, with the defense spearheaded by Morgan Springer, who is averaging 4.57 digs per set.
The next morning (Sept. 3) at 11:00, U of L will face the Panthers, who are 2-2 overall and coming off of wins over Chicago State and Coppin State and losses against Miami (Ohio) and Indiana State. EIU is hitting .138 as a team and holding opponents to a .215 hitting percentage. They are led offensively by Katie Kirby who is averaging 2.21 kills per set. Setter Chrissie Albers averages 8.00 assists and Brittany Wallace averages 3.57 digs per set.
U of L will face Wichita State at 7:00 on Saturday. The Shockers are coming off a 1-2 opening weekend of competition, playing at the Chevron Wahine Invitational at the University of Hawai'i. Wichita State fell to Arizona and No. 10 Hawai'i at the tournament before downing South Florida in the finale. Camri Zweister was named to the All-Tournament team at the event and leads the Shockers with 2.50 kills per set and adds 2.25 digs per set. Middle blocker Elizabeth Field tallied impressive defensive numbers, averaging 1.17 blocks per set in the opening weekend of play. Sarah Waldorf leads the back row defense for the Shockers with 4.67 digs per set.
