Louisville, Ky. - The future is looking good for the Louisville women's golf team. Rising sophomore Tara Lyons and freshman Katie Petrino are off to a great start this summer with first place finishes in their first summer tournaments.
Last week Lyons qualified for the 2011 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. She claimed medalist honors at her qualifying tournament June 1 at the Hickory Stick Golf Course in Greenwood, Ind., with a round of 69. This year's U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship will be held June 27-July 2 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.
A native of Little River, S.C., Lyons played in all 11 tournaments as a true freshman for the Cardinals in 2010-11. She compiled an average of 79.9 over 31 rounds. Ferrell placed a season-high 19th at the BIG EAST Championships. Lyons shot a collegiate low of 69 in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in the fall.
The U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship is one of the 13 National Championships conducted by the United States Golf Association. The format for the event begins with state level qualifying at over 40 sites throughout the United States. Approximately 156 players will qualify to compete for the 64 spots in the Match Play portion of the Championship. The competition concludes with the 36-hole championship match on Saturday, July 2.
After sitting out the season to redshirt, Petrino started her summer with a win at the Collegiate Players Tour Tournament in Spring, Texas yesterday. She shot a 73 in the first round, a 74 in the second round and sealed the win with a 70 in the final round at Gleanloch Pines Golf Course.
