LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The University of Louisville volleyball team dug themselves into a deep hole early during its final spring match against Illinois on Saturday afternoon. Down 2-0 to the Illini while hitting .056, the Cardinals charged back winning the next three sets while hitting .421 to take a 20-25, 12-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-10 decision in front of 1,095 people on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Arena. The Cardinals recorded nine blocks over the final three sets after only notching two in the first two.
"In a spring match you are more worried about the progression of your team rather than the outcome," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "We came out timidly and then got a lot of energy from our sold out crowd. We relaxed and started playing well. I don't think I have seen a team work as hard in the spring as this one and it showed in game five -- we were not tired. It ended our spring match on a great note."
Anastasia Artemeva recorded nine of her team high 22 kills during the third set to lead the comeback. Emily Juhl added 13 kills and narrowly missed a double-double finishing with nine digs. Libero Caitlin Welch added 10 digs while Taylor Brauneis dished out 38 assists. Brooke Mattingly recorded six total blocks on the afternoon.
